The spaniels are native of Spain. They passed in transit by France before becoming established durably in England from the 14-th century. These dogs were used in the hunting.
During the centuries which followed, various types of spaniels got free and it is likely that in the 17-th century some marriages with small Asian spaniels brought to the cocker spaniel that one selected from the end of the 19-th century.
One used him in the hunting in snipe (" woodcock ") of which come his name.
He was introduced in France in the last years of the 19-th century and became the auxiliary of indispensable hunting in campaigns invaded by rabbits.
The French people discovered in him an adorable dog of company, kind, sweet, sociable, faithful and affectionate. The cocker spaniel was very fashionable in the 70s, especially the "golden color". Too fashionably, regrettably... An overproduction not always well mastered had for result of the aggressive dogs with genetic tares. The cocker spaniel had then so bad reputation as he was abandoned by his amateurs.
After a long and patient work which lasted about twenty years, very good breeders eradicated the problem. Nowadays, the cocker spaniel became again admirable dog that he should have been. He is overflowing with energy, and so that he keeps his balance, he needs activities.
